15 May 2007
Much has happened over these past few months.

Well, not really.

The band have been pre-occupied with the discovery of Goldschlager, and all that comes with it, and so gig-time has been squeezed out in our quest for the shimmering Swiss goodness.

Now that a supplier has been found, we are ready to "go on the road" again. We'll be playing on the 12th of June at the Barfly - supporting the err... interestingly titled "Sleazy Come Easy" - you can google the name yourselves.

18+ sadly, but we're working on sorting out a 14+ not too long after for all you chillun to crawl out of the woodwork for.

Info will be updated when we get it, avast!

Rejoice!

...For I have fixed the bug that stopped the entire contents of the page being displayed.

Next stop: the forum. I'm working with out new hosts to try get the forums back up to the state they were in before. The delay has been due to my reluctance to lose everything that we had in there previously. There are backups!

FREE MUSIC:

If you head on over to the music page, you'll find two songs from H.A.E. that have been put up for grabs. "Fore" and "White Wine and Angels" Let it never be said that The RipOffs don't support MP3 downloads.

QMU Gig:

We've been confirmed to play at Glasgow's QMU on the 12th of February (2007!). More details as they emerge.

Our first gig of the latter part of the year also happens to be our first ever appearance (performance-wise) at the infamous King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow.

We will be supporting the sublime We Are The Physics on the 19th of December.

We Are Not Dead

Oh
Oh No Siree; we're all falling back into our routines after the stopgap of the summer. But have no fear! We have been plugging away in a messy, undisclosed location near the East End of Glasgow to make sure that everything is in tip-top, squeaky clean shape for the next adventures.

The scheduled gig in the Carnival Arts Centre with the SSP has been postponed indefinitely, due to the current internal chaos. A shame really, but life soldiers on, and we're working on some other tasty events worth spending money on for ye faithful to troupe along to.

Site Move

It's all quiet on the RipOffs front over the summer... but the eagle eyed amongst you will notice some problems getting to the forum and maybe some other bits and pieces of the site. (hopefully not!)

This is due to our old host, Eckohost, closing down permanently; resulting in us having to shift the entire website over to somewhere else. This is largely complete, but I will need to work on the forum later on today. Just so you're aware :)

Imagine if everything you said on MSN, searched for on Google, or put on your website was stripped, censored and watched by the Government, or big corporation.

Everyone knows that China blocks access to certain websites that criticise the Government, but so do hundreds of others around the world.

The internet is at the fore-front of the battle to protect human right; your human rights - not to be put in jail for something you say on the internet.

Take a look at the latest Amnesty International Campaign - irrepressible.info.

Below you'll find some information that will update, that someone somewhere has been jailed, attacked, or censored for saying elsewhere on the internet. It'll find a permanent home on the misc page of this site as well, so you can always find it when it slips down the news pile.

Wired Effect

Yesterday, the observant amongst you will notice that we had gone over our bandwidth limit - meaning, in effect, that we'd had way too much traffic than our account was set up for. It's due to the massive levels of traffic we received from Wired.com after a rogue link which led to us. (link now removed).

Rest assured, this has been fixed, and we shall no longer be subject to the "slashdot effect" ever again.

02 Dec 2005
A while ago we played a gig for Human Rights Day... infact, it was what gave birth to Handwriting of the Illiterate as a song.

After running expenses, we made a small bit of money which has been lying around, in limbo as to where it should go.

The RipOffs donated that money tonight to the Positive Action in Housing charity; fighting to stop the way that people who have been living here for years are being forcibly dragged out of their houses and bundled away by the Government in Westminster, with not a squeak of protest from our spineless so-called "First Minister" Jack McConnell.

People are having their doors kicked down and being refused the right to take any of their possessions with them, and being dragged off to be stuck on a plane back to dangerous countries, without any care of whether the whole family are there or not. These are not people who are trying to sponge an easy life - they are more Scottish than half the Scots who live here: engrained into our schools and lives inseperably, but despite this, the racism of the current Government sees no wrong in completely disregarding this, and treating them as criminals.

We are one of the richest countries in the world, and we've gotten that way by exploiting people, patronisingly sneering down our democratic noses, and refusing to let anyone question us, because we "have freedom"... upholding human rights whilst smashing them apart with the other hand. Suddenly, if people who we've cheated out of having a decent way of life want to escape the war-torn countries which we have created, they are portrayed as criminals and scum, and locked up.

I don't know about you, and to a certain extent, I don't really care - but this is wrong. Checkout the links below, or email us if you want to query. And for once, do something about it - fax your local MP online and tell them you disagree with the way people are being treated in Scotland... in your city. Even better - find Jack McConnell's email on the page linked below... let him know what you think of him, and why.

OH NOES!

Today I have learned of some terrible news.

A band which have inspired me, not to mention the whole band (which is a rare feat, be assured.); who have accompanied us with their beautiful sounds on trips to Edinburgh, Dundee and suchlike; a band who never failed to remind us of why we play, and sparked off some of that energy in me in the first place, have split.

On the Crackout.com website, the following message was posted yesterday:

"Sadly, after a few years of incredible fun, we have decided to end Crackout.

While we are still the best of friends and intend on continuing with music, it just didn't seem right to continue with Crackout any longer. While we were involved with other projects, too much time had passed since we last toured and when we came back to play the recent gigs.

Although those gigs were enjoyable to play, we simply felt at odds with our past and unable to continue.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you all for your support,

Steven, Nick and Jack"

So here's to you Crackout; here's to you.

The RipOffs play Kirkie Main Street

Do you remember when U2 stopped traffic atop a hotel building in America? Do you recall the time that Rage Against the Machine forced Wall Street to close, despite being told they weren't allowed to play?

Well, the time has come.

To help launch music cafe "Whahay", run by old friends in Kirkie Baptist, the RipOffs shall take to the cafe across from Ghiloni's on Kirkie main street; on Thursday the 24th of November; along with Eon Hetherton, who shall entertain with a one-off acoustic set.

The venue is *tiny* - holding around 40 people maximum, and shall set the scene for quite possibly the most intense RipOffs gig this year. There will be no charge, and with the possibility of excitement and drama as the sounds of Stuck in Democracy blare down the town centre where we live (in close proximity to the regional police HQ), do you really want to miss it?

Price: Free
Time: Doors 7.30. Music soon after.
Location: Cafe across from Ghiloni's, Kirkie main street.

See you there..

Man nor beast can contain the infamous Haigie, but we'll be damned if we're not going to try.

The "Music" section has moved to become a sub-ordinate of the all powerful "Media" area, along with video, and pics. A new, sorely-needed "Misc." section has appeared, to house all the stuff we can't fit in on the mainpage (to be brutally honest). Underneath this new section, you'll find a link to "Haigie's corner", which will very soon be up and running, and contain all of the lyrical rantings from this amusing character.

(The link isn't active yet, so don't email about it being down just yet. I'll post a quickie notice when it's up and running)

May God have mercy on us all.

Fore Live Video Download

Going against what I usually feel on the matter, a video of Fore has been uploaded from the last Ivory Blacks gig. Haigie is rather restrained, but his bass had just fallen apart; evident from the fact that he doesn't have his usual stringed thing draped round his neck.

Are The RipOffs a ripoff?

Displayed below is an e-mail sent to me, verbatim, and my reply. I thought it important to post this for all to see.

The e-mail:
"Point of fact:
There was ANOTHER Rip Offs from the USA in the 90's. They even played England. Do yourself a favor & consider a name change or add a "UK" to the end ( EG Chaos UK ).

It's somewhat baffling in this day & age of Google that people don't fact check band names."

Our response:
"Well my friend, it is a pleasure to meet of you as well, and may I say, what a stunning introduction that was.

Point of fact: Despite the fact that our name is "The RipOffs", and not "Rip Offs" (which may seem trivial to you, but Microsoft is not the same as Micro Soft), there are many bands with similar names to "The RipOffs"; a fact, of which we are well aware. So why keep our name? Well firstly, it's baffling in "this day and age of Google" that people like yourself don't yet realise the vastness of the world we live in. The chance of naming a band a completely unique, original name, are close to zero. Adding "UK" onto the end of a name does little to distinguish a small Glaswegian band from an American band of the same title, which, I'm afraid to tell you, aren't that well known ;).

Am I worried about being sued? Not really. Am I worried that some English fans of the olden day Rip Offs will cry foul? Nah. Partly due to the fact that we live in Scotland. (Check your map - it's also part of the UK. Yeah... the north bit.)

So, as I bid you farewell, I do hope that you got over your silly indignation to take a listen to our songs. If you like them, then the name will not matter that much. Do you not find some irony that you are complaining about a band with the name "RipOffs" stealing another band's name? ;) If you do happen to be a member of this band however, I await your lawyer's letter in anticipation.

Greetings, one and all.

We've decided to setup a bit on the site where you lot can have your pictures. You're the ones who come along to the gigs, so why not have a gallery of mugshots (or do I mean mugs? ;p ) to display proudly?

Send in your pictures that you deem worthy enough to be shown on the website in a gallery, and email them to stephen@theripoffs.co.uk.

Don't worry about the size or anything like that - I'll resize and crop them, but no... we don't airbrush anything, so make sure they're good photos. Please try to make them above 50x50 pixels though (ie, make them big enough to view without straining the eyes), as if they're too small, I'll just chuck them. Also, try to make sure it's mainly you that is in the photo, and not you standing in the distance beside a tree, or historic monument, unless it's hilariously funny.

By sending the pics, you agree to:

- The display of your pictures on the website as described above.
- The right for them to be removed at any time without any given notice.

And that's about it... I've no guaruntees when they'll actually be put online, but once I get a decent number - they'll be up.

So go forth and flash your camera. (no... just, no.)

Alright. I've been busy and lazy at the sametime. Most of you know the dillyo on the news - upcoming gigs and the net radio but I never got around to posting it on the site... But of course, since the newsletter we've had more gigs.

A new 'net based radio station, Radio Magnetic (www.radiomagnetic.com) have chosen to feature us on their 'New Music Chart'. If we do well then we'll be featured on their website. Voting ends on the 29th August, so I think you should vote for us. DO it. DO IT NOW:

Also, tune into the gigs page as we have plenty coming up in the next few months.

We're also involved in Impact Art's Music Project. Basically we get free studio time and a tutor. They'll be paying this guy overtime to put up with us. :) The course ends with a city centre gig. I'm not *certain* of the venue, however I'm sure you will of heard of it... ;)

Bus for Brimingham?
To say the least I am disappointed, but it is just not going to work out to get to Birmingham.
Sorry folks, everyone who had paid so far will be refunded in full, so no worries there.
Cheers for your support. =)

The Kirkintilloch Herald has a rather endearing section on us this week... I'll scan it in and upload later, complete with misquotes and all ;o

Ok, so here's the deal. On a personal request: Keep Wednesday the 30th of March free.

We have been booked to play MacSorley's in Glasgow again, and due to a communication error, it's the night of my birthday.

So, do come along for a night out, and witness our musical brilliance at the same time. It should be a fun evening..

Cheers, Stephen.

**EDIT** - Blah. Too many dates - it's the Wednesday, not the Thursday, as I said on the mailing list email. Sorry about that.

Another gig announced... a return to the Barfly on the 21st April, this time at night. Tickets are priced at £4, and can be obtained from any of the band.

We need to sell a certain amount to cover costs, so if you can spare time on Thursday the 21st of the spring month, do get in touch.

More information will be posted as we receive it.

Couple of dates semi-confirmed for April.

Firstly on Sunday the 9th of April - with the delectable "Stocious" in Leftbank, Edinburgh...

then playing as part of a 4pm-1am gig in an incredibly cool wee venue - the Carnival Arts Centre, Glasgow. It's on Albion Street, close to the Trongate. Very obscure place, but damn cool. Anyway, we'll be on nearer the end. It's to promote/raise funds for a CD compilation organised by "Jump OutPuts"

Indeed.

If you're observant, you'll notice a wee button has appeared alongside the other ones at the top, and looks something like this:

If you click it, you'll find endless wit and information on various musings at shows - to keep such filth off of this lovely clean news page.

Pictures from the gig with Solomon's folly have also been added to the media section, under "other pictures" or, click here

Oxgang has come and passed. The lineup was a bit mis-matched, but the Folly were pretty sterling chaps (and chapettes)
Not on top form when it came down to it, (us), but all in all, everything went fairly ok.

A quote from Michal nicely sums up the evening:

"It was good, but there's been better"

That is all.

OK folks. I've been doing some work and such, and this gig is definitely going to be happening! laughing

The plan, atm, is too leave Kirkie at 12, then it'll be around 6-7 hours drive to the venue. After the show, we'll be leaving the venue between midnight and 1 am, the band will _not_ be going back with you lot. You should be arriving back in Kirki
